Conservation ~ The Seed Bank
Seed Collections
and their Uses
Seed Bank collections are perhaps the most tangible products of
The Berry Botanic Garden's Conservation Program. These collections
provide an "insurance policy" for wild plants: their existence
means that if the populations from which they were collected should
die out or be destroyed, the genetic legacy is not irrecoverably
lost.
Stored seed may be used for a variety of purposes, with the most
important use being, if the need arises, reintroduction back into
the wild. Seed collections can also be used to learn how to germinate
and propagate rare plants, information that is often not known and
would otherwise require collecting additional plant material from
the wild. The ultimate goal of our work is to help plants survive
in the wild.
