Rhodie Walk Special Event
Join us in appreciating the sweetest time of year here at BBG as Executive Director Scott Vergara, formerly Director of the Rhododendron Species Foundation, tours the Rhododendron Forest and imparts BBG rhodie lore. Experience the spring bounty, including Rhododendron fargesii, R. kaempheri, R. orbiculare and R. loderi ‘King George’.
Enjoy refreshments and (hopefully!) sunshine with fellow rhododendron enthusiasts. Huge species rhododendrons will be cloaked in heavy trusses of blooms, spent flowers covering the ground. Smaller varietals, with unusual markings, velvety leaves and rich, deep colors are a delight all over the garden. The occasional fragrant species is a wonderful surprise!

Open House Presentation-- Native Plant Conservation: Champions of Oregon's Treasures
When you take a walk in a greenspace park, do you wonder about the trees, shrubs and flowers around you-are they native or introduced? Are they threatened by development or even collectors? Why should you care? Botanist Troy Maddux, with the Oregon Dept. of Agriculture's Native Plant Conservation Program, has the behind-the-scenes job of keeping an eye on the wealth (and health) of plants in our area. He works with a network of organizations that partner to preserve the sometimes fragile natural web and to raise our awareness. Get to know the endangered plants of Portland. Our Conservation Biologist, Andrea Raven, will offer a short introduction to BBG's conservation activities.

Elegant Contrasts Garden Tour
The Berry Botanic Garden is sponsoring “Elegant Contrasts,” a tour of four private gardens in the Riverdale-Dunthorpe neighborhood. The four unique southwest Portland gardens demonstrate elegant contrasts between traditional and more modern, and quite large and more intimate spaces:

• varied two acres with vegetable beds, terraces, magnolia walks, plus an elegant, well-established Japanese garden, designed by noted landscape architect Craig Keist;
• bold, modern garden with integrated sculpture and water features, and a lovely perennial border scheme;
• elegant garden that demonstrates how to make the most of a difficult space and includes a lovely entrance and formal pool area ;
• English cottage flair with rounded beds and established rhododendrons. Originally designed by the Grants of Seattle, who were prominent in the 40s and 50s.
